Random Sports Ramblings

I'm currently watching Opening Day of the 2007 Detroit Tigers' season (It's 3-3, and Craig Monroe just struck out to end the sixth inning). I have to say, it is great to see people finally interested in the Tigers again. I really wish I could be there at the park today. Ah well...there will be plenty of opportunities to go in the coming months.

You know, you take away the Lions, and Detroit truly is a great sports town. ESPN Magazine just did their annual list of the best sports team in all the sports, based on a bunch of different stats (Championships, stadium experience, ticket value, and a bunch of other stuff). The Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings all landed in the Top 30, I believe. The Pistons were, I think, still in the Top 10, and the Tigers had moved somewhere up the ranks to #18 or so. Meanwhile, with all these great teams, the Lions finished...yep, you guessed it...dead last. When are their fans going to become like Cincy's fans and stop going to the games? I mean, honestly, we all know that they're not going to be good until the Fords no longer own the team and Millen is no longer around.

(Zumaya's on the mound now, throwing his 100+ heaters...although he last one was a mere 99 MPH) Keeping on the baseball thought, fantasy baseball's officially begun. I'm playing in two leagues, one on Yahoo! and one on ESPN. I'm down at the moment, but I'm sure my guys will pull out the win come week's end. Although I already had a Myspace message from Ken telling me that I shouldn't have benched Paul Lo Duca (Would've gotten me 6 1/2 points, but it's all good).

Okay, so this isn't really a "sport," but I've got to talk about Wrestlemania 23, being that it was in Detroit and all. No, I didn't go, and no, I didn't order the PPV (Craig Monroe just made another great catch at the wall). But I did have to check out the pictures and recaps. Vince McMahon got his head shaved...no real shocker. I mean, no one really believed that Donald Trump was going to be shaved, did they? Undertaker won one of the championships and moved to 15-0 in his Wrestlemania career...again, no real shocker. And, much to the chagrin of some of my friends who went, John Cena retained his title by beating Shawn Michaels. But, if I were a betting man, I would bet that the lasting image of Wrestlemania will be the image of Jeff Hardy basically breaking Edge and himself in half. Basically, he went off the top of a ladder that was in the ring (Guessing by the picture, the larger ladder...I think it's 15 or 20 feet high) and smashed into Edge, who was laying on a ladder that was set up on top of the edge of the ring and the barrier right by the fans. It'll be the lasting image because THE LADDER BROKE...not a table, but a LADDER. I really wish I could have seen that...what an incredible sight it would have been.
